Do You Actually Need an App for Your Business?

"Should we build an app?" is one of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is often: maybe not. An app is a big investment, and for plenty of businesses a good website does the job for far less. Here is how to tell.

When an app makes sense

A mobile app is worth it when:

  • People will use it often, ideally daily or weekly. Apps earn their place on the home screen through repeat use.
  • You need phone features: camera, GPS, push notifications, or offline access.
  • The experience genuinely benefits from being fast and native, not just a page in a browser.

Think fitness trackers, delivery, messaging, anything that lives in someone's pocket.

When it doesn't (yet)

You probably do not need an app if:

  • People will use it occasionally, not as a habit.
  • It is mainly information, bookings, or a storefront. A website handles those well.
  • You are still testing the idea. An app is a slow, expensive way to learn what a website can teach you quickly.

The cheaper middle ground

If you are unsure, start with a web app. It works on every phone instantly, it is faster and cheaper to build, and it needs no app store approval. If it takes off and people clearly want an app, you build one then, with real demand to justify it.

The bottom line

Do not build an app because competitors have one. Build one when daily use or phone features make it genuinely better. Until then, a strong website usually wins. If you want a straight opinion on which path fits your business, it is worth talking it through with someone who has built both.
